Veta Hudson-Rae (1944-2020)
Midwife, Health Visitor, Manager, Magistrate

We are very sorry to say that chair of BRASS, Veta Hudson-Rae, passed away last week after a brief illness.

Veta was our chair for the last 6 years, during which time BRASS has continued to survive and grow in a time of austerity.

She was always on hand to give us support and wise advice.

She always kind and considerate and will be much missed.

We go forward with very fond memories of her here at BRASS and all the great good she did with other Bedford groups and her many friends.

Our thoughts are with her family and all her friends.

Veta was born in Jamaica and came to Britain to join her parents in November 1959.  She started her nurses training in 1963 at Ashford Hospital, Middlesex.  In 1967 she trained in Midwifery in Surrey.

In 1968 she joined Bedford Health Authority as a Community Midwife.  In 1976 she qualified as a Health visitor, and later worked as a community practice teacher.  In 1989 she became a manager for health visitors, district nurses, school nurses and other community staff.

In 2000, Veta retired, but since then had been a magistrate for 13 years, as well as more recently serving as Chair of BRASS.

In 2014, Veta received an award from the High Sheriff of Bedfordshire ‘in recognition of great and valuable service in the community’.

The Syrian Vulnerable Persons Resettlement Scheme (SVPRS) is a United Nations programme, administered in the UK by the Home Office. The scheme is intended to resettle families who are refugees from the Syrian conflict, including Syrians and other nationalities. Under this scheme, Bedford Borough Council has agreed to accept and resettle 20 such families. BRASS works with the Borough Council to implement the scheme. The general and primary objective of BRASS is to enable these families to integrate themselves into the social, economic and cultural life of Bedford.
